There’s no doubt that e-commerce has evolved significantly. Where once it was enough simply to impress visitors, today it needs to offer complete functionality together with a superior transactional experience.

In this post we share some helpful tips to help businesses achieve tangible results when it comes to e-commerce:

1. SEO: Be easy to find

Good SEO is no longer simply about having good titles. You need good metadata and plenty of backlinks leading back to your website. Images need to have well-thought-out, descriptive and fully optimised names while no e-commerce website is complete without social media links.

2. Get translating

You’ll be surprised to discover a love for your brand in many different parts of the world, which is why it’s essential to appeal to your entire audience by getting your website translated into as many languages as possible. It’s easy to get texts translated thanks to professional translation services such as Gengo, which offer high-quality, affordable translations on a vast scale. Consumers should be able to select their preferred language at the click of a button, right from the outset.

3. Analytics

Once your site is attracting visitors, you need to understand more about their browsing habits. What are they looking at? Which pages are most popular? How are they discovering your products? How (and why) are they leaving your site? Use popular tools such as Google Analytics to determine users’ behaviour. You should also include a search box on your pages, which will enable you to analyse exactly what users are looking for when they visit your site (and therefore provide more of the same).

4. Speed

A slow website is no longer acceptable in the world of e-commerce as people expect to surf from link to link almost immediately. To achieve, keep your design as simple as possible and avoid unnecessary visual effects, JavaScript or fonts. Also, use a scalable cloud server as this lets you scale up when demand increases. Last but not least, use server-side caching where possible.

5. Never ignore user experience

If your focus is simply on having an amazing looking website, then you’ve lost half the battle. All users want is to be able to perform a quick search, access what they’re looking for and make a purchase in as few steps as possible. The more fluid and familiar the navigation process is, the more likely the shopper will find what they are looking for and (hopefully) make a purchase. Just one look at Amazon’s iPhone app will show you that the focus of their design is all about convenience and expediency. Within 3 taps of a screen, you can have the latest TV delivered to your doorstep within a few days.
