Creating catchy, original wording on your social media posts is important if you want your posts to stand out and your readers to take action. For this reason, it’s essential to avoid using cliché words and phrases that lead people to roll their eyes and ignore your latest post.
To help you avoid using some of the most common clichés, here’s our list of recommendations and some alternative words to use instead:
1. Groundbreaking
This is one that is extremely overused and tends to be used by businesses who are trying to entice readers to click through. But ‘groundbreaking’ has lost its impact as a word due to overuse, and should therefore only be used if something is truly groundbreaking (such as the invention of a life changing technology or something that is genuinely groundbreaking).
Instead, opt for something along the lines of, ‘new to the industry,’ ‘innovative’ or ‘outstanding’ to avoid sounding cliché.
2. Check this out!
‘Check this out’ is so overused that it no longer has the power to encourage readers to take action. Instead, include a short description of the article or blog post you are posting to tease your readers in. Don’t forget to include a link!
3. Selfie
This is a term that has saturated the online world – particularly social media. If you don’t want to be associated with the Kardashians, opt for something more traditional such as ‘photo’ or ‘image’ when asking your customers to participate.
4. LOL
This is a much-overused expression in the online/digital world, which is completely understandable since it’s so easy to use, is short and to the point. The acronym, which stands for ‘laugh out loud’ is an informal way to show that you found something entertaining, however, as a business it’s important to avoid using this extremely informal statement within your social media posts.
Instead, don’t say anything at all! If you’ve posted something funny or made a comment that you believe to be funny, there’s no need to add ‘LOL’ onto the end of it. Let your readers decide how entertaining your post was, whether by ‘reacting’ to it on Facebook using Facebook’s new reaction buttons, leaving a comment or reposting it for their own followers to enjoy.
5. World-class
Instead of using this highly dated phrase, replace it with a statistic to show how incredible your products or services are. This alone will demonstrate to your company how popular your brand is, without the need to use dated truisms.
As you can see there are plenty of words and phrases you should avoid when crafting your social media posts. Being creative and innovative with your wording will give you a far greater chance of actually appealing to your audience and encouraging them to click through.
