Infographics are all the rage in the world of online marketing. They are easy on the eye, easy to digest and highly shareable, making a perfect marketing mix guaranteed to successfully showcase your message, increase brand awareness and propel your business into the limelight.

Storyboarding is the first stage of planning your infographic. It involves a general idea of how you plan to create your infographic using illustrations or images. It also includes a general idea of the types of words, positioning and overall message you intend to portray to your readers.

Next we have the design stage. This puts all of the above into action and usually involves a little tweaking and changing here and there to really make your infographic shine.

Finally we have promotion. This stage of the creation process takes into account the promotional aspects of your infographic, including how and where you intend to promote it. Who will you be reaching out to about your infographic? Are these brands or websites relevant to your industry of operation and industry leaders themselves? The key here is to get your infographic seen by as many pairs of eyes as possible across the most relevant industry blogs and websites imaginable.

Moving on to the infographic…

Your infographic’s title needs to be compelling, engaging and keyword-rich. It needs to give the reader an immediate idea of what the infographic is all about, and compel them to scroll on to see more.

Next, the infographic itself needs to be all about your audience. This isn’t your time to self-promote your products or services; it’s your time to appeal to readers by providing them with a useful, helpful, inspiring or educational piece of information – all in a visual manner.

Don’t overwhelm your audience with too much information. It if’s all starting to look too complicated, remove some elements so that your focus is on one primary area. Your infographic also needs to be well structured so that it takes readers on a journey.

Lay your information out into digestible chunks. The whole purpose of your infographic is to help your readers in an interesting, entertaining and engaging way, so once they finish they should feel as if they have truly gained something from the journey – without getting bored along the way.

Keep your use of font and colour to a minimum. Your goal here is to maintain audience interest without distracting them from the purpose of the infographic.

Last but not least, throw in some helpful and reliable statistics and quotes from trustworthy sources (don’t forget to reference them).
